Reliquary of St. Lawrence (San Lorenzo) in gilded silver made in 1489 by Domenico Aloisi. The reliquary has a hexagonal base of 15 cm. with decorated bands interrupted by a large knot decorated with lion heads. The body of the reliquary is a hexagonal temple, each side framed by twisted spiral columns with capitals, acanthus leaves, triple lobed arches and columns with winged cherub heads. On the hexagonal dome we find the inscription:

DIGITVUS ET RELIQVIE BEATISSIMI ET GLORIOSISSIMI LAVRENTII PROTETTORIS CIVITATIS VITERBIENSIS 1489 OPVS DOMINICVS ALOVISI.
Above another small box there is written: “EX CRANIO S. LORENTII MARITIS” with another small cylinder.
Above the tabernacle with the relics there is a cupola with scaled decorations topped by a statue of San Lorenzo dressed in a Dalmatic tunic. On the entablature there are garlands and on each side of the tympanum precious stones including a ruby surrounded by diamonds and an emerald.

The reliquary of San Lorenzo is an example of traditional provincial style and shows how slowly the goldsmith’s craft and figurative language evolved over the centuries. Few goldsmiths, besides Domenico Aloisi, have left signed and dated works to help us define the specific characteristics of the Viterbo area.
