The most important political-military happenings of the 16th century for hegemony over Europe and in Italy on the part of Spain and France where the most important mercenary captains were involved: Pirro Baglioni da Sippiciano. An extraordinary character of great military and political value, Pirro offers his services to the pope Clement VII and Paul III, to Emperor Charles V and King Francis I of France, to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo de’Medici, participating in military campaigns in Italy and Europe, Of strong character, controversial, an angry man who shows his anger on the battle field, he is able to be affectionate in his family, God fearing and very devout. He is the protagonist in the battle of Montemurlo in 1537 that brought the Medici to Florence, becoming a hero at Carignano in the French siege of 1544, participating to the war of Smalcalda in 1546-47. He received honors and benefits from Cosimo de’Medici, Charles V gave him lands in the Kingdom of Naples and the Mortara Marches. He was one of the founders of the Accademia degli Umidi, then the Accademia Fiorentina, where Niccolò Martelli and Antonfrancesco Grazzini, illustrious men of letters, dedicated sonnets to him. There are also numerous “imprese” happenings that historians and biographers Paolo Giovio, Lodovico Domenichi, and Giovanni Ferro,  entitled to celebrate his acts of heroism done on the battle fields.
