The book is an archeological guide to the many thermal sites from Roman times present in Viterbo’s territory. Between wellness and culture, the author, an archeologist and maximum expert of thermal sites in the Viterbese area, guides us to the rediscovery of a rich past.
The thermal sites have never been so fully prized and valorized as in the Roman period. To do this numerous thermal complexes were built that today are only scattered ruins near the city. Between the Bacucco baths in the north and the Masse di S. Sisto in the south, a long 11 kilometer strip of territory, corresponding to the major sources, is documented with the existence of at least twelve different buildings along the sides of the ancient Via Cassia. This area of Tuscia was an important thermal station of ancient Rome. This was made possible thanks to different elements: the richness of the waters, the good connections with Rome, not too far away.
Obviously the property of the waters were known in different periods. The baths were very much enjoyed by the Etruscans up to the time of the Grand Tour with Montaigne. Even today they make Viterbo famous.
