Author Mary Jane Cryan wished to have Patricia Glee Smith and Nancy Hart as illustrators for this book dedicated to their second homeland. The author is American of Irish origins and has resided  in Italy for over half a century. This is her fourth book dedicated to her adopted home, Tuscia, also known as Etruria.

Patricia Glee Smith, an American who has resided for many years between Rome and the Umbrian town of Otricoli has painted the beautiful cover. The delicate pencil illustrations of Nancy Hart interpret the picturesque corners and fountains of Viterbo.

To illustrate the book she had the help of a group of Italian and foreign photographers among them were Agostino Cecchini, Francesco Pignatale and Maurizio Pinna. Their shots show the details of this part of Italy which is still unknown to mass tourism and become a further motive for discovering it.

Divided into four chapters dedicated to itineraries, influences, treasures and characters, “Etruria travel, history and itineraries in Central Italy” begins with the Etruscans and goes on to lesser known themes, giving tourism operators precious ideas for creating new itineraries.

Some of the essays were first written for Italian magazines and have been adapted for English speaking visitors. Others have grown out of the conferences and seminars the author has presented in university study courses and on cruise ships, in fact  for visitors arriving with cruise ships in Civitavecchia   the author suggests the Etruscan Triangle itinerary from Civitavecchia to Tarquinia, Tuscania and Vetralla.

“The latest book of Mary Jane Cryan confirms her as an authority on this fascinating area of Italy known as Etruria,” writes English journalist Margaret Stenhouse, “She is a scrupulous researcher and knows how to combine study, research and erudition with her passion for the theme treated, bringing to life people and events from the past”.

The sections dedicated to history and the little known international connections are the fruit of original research and long hours passed among documents in the dusty archives of Italy, England and Ireland to find facts never before mentioned in ordinary books or guide books.

By the same author and published by Edizioni Archeoares: Etruria. Storie e segreti and The Irish and English in Italy’s Risorgimento.
