In 1978 the porters decided to institute the Sodality of Santa Rosa’s Porters: they set up rules and organized a headquarters in an ancient building in San Pellegrino medieval quarter where the Museum is located. The beginning of the Sodality allowed the porters to better organize their respective responsibilities and division of labor within the group.
In December 2013 this led to the important recognition of the Macchina as an intangible heritage by UNESCO and the creation of the “network of the great Macchina a spalla” which includes the Gigli of Nola, the Candelieri of Sassari and the Varia of Palmi.
